A Ryanair flight from Greece to Munich was forced to make an emergency landing when a fragment of the engine smashed a window and seriously injured a passenger.
Engine fails on Ryanair flight to Munich
On July 10, a Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki’s Makedonia Airport to Munich Memmingen was forced to return to Thessaloniki for an emergency landing after a serious engine failure.
A piece of the engine broke away, struck and entirely smashed a window, seriously injuring the passenger sitting immediately at that window.
According to Breaking Aviation News & Videos, part of the passenger’s body was sucked out of the smashed plane window, but the man was restrained by his wife.
The incident happened as the plane was flying over North Macedonia. Once the flight had made an emergency landing in Thessaloniki, the 61-year-old Serbian national was taken to hospital to receive a CT scan and be treated for friction burns.
Four other passengers were taken to hospital for medical checks, and three have since been discharged.
Ryanair already under investigation
In a statement to Euronews, Ryanair recounted the series of events, saying that a “passenger window dislodged in flight” and that “one passenger requested and received medical assistance on the ground in Thessaloniki”.
According to the news website, aviation authorities have not launched an investigation into the cause of the engine failure.
Despite the incident and other regular safety issues on Ryanair flights, the Irish airline was named the safest budget airline in Europe in 2025 by airline review site AirlineRatings.
